You can check for this by using your TV remote to expand the video on your DVDs to fill the 16:9 frame (choose the "Full" or "Wide" setting, not "Zoom"). Without that trigger, anamorphic 16:9 recordings display as squeezed in a 4:3 frame on many HDTVs.
